Is Weight Watchers Sponge Cake Worth 1 Point?

If there is one thing our reviewers like it’s reviewing a new food product. Make that new food a snack cake that is low in calories and we’re even happier! Our review team recently put the new Weight Watchers Golden Sponge Cake to the test of our mouths and our families. Read below to find out whether it was a prop or a pan.

We aren’t usually ones to buy “diet foods” in our house. We tend to shun them all together and go for the regular, full calorie, full fat goodies. So, when the chance came to try Weight Watchers Golden Sponge Cakes, I was willing to give it a try. After all, we are trying to watch our figures around here!

While they certainly aren’t as tasty as their full calorie counter parts, for 80 calories they do satisfy the sweet tooth. They are great for those times when you really do need a sugary snack, but don’t want to pay for it in calories. The portion is smaller and not quiet as moist as their full calorie Twinkie counterparts. The cream is also kind of different and I found myself eating around the cream and having only the cake. However, the taste is similar enough that you could trick yourself into thinking you are having a Twinkie if you haven’t had one in a long time. Over all, not too bad for a diet food snack!

I recently joined Weight Watchers so the opportunity to review a dessert that had only 1 point was something I was more than ready to do. I waited eagerly for the day that my “Twinkie wannabee” would arrive in the mail. The day came and I eagerly tore open the box and sat for a few minutes reading the content details.

The part that I kept coming back to was 1 point. Only 1. Although each treat is equivalent to about three bites, I figured I could eat 2 snack cakes and still be doing fine.

It just so happened that there were 3 other people at my house also on Weight Watchers when I tore open the first cake. I ate it while they watched. At that point, I wasn’t even willing to share my remaining cakes. Then a funny thing happened. My tongue started tingling and it was a very strange sensation. I opened another one and they each took one bite and although they didn’t experience it as much as I did, they all confirmed that the sponge cake left a weird feeling on your tongue. I don’t know if it is the preservatives, sweeteners or what - but it is definitely there. Which is enough to keep me from buying this product and that was more heartbreaking than one sponge cake should ever have the power to be.

Desserts with little guilt - it doesn’t get much better than that. As I enjoyed the new Weight Watchers Sponge Cakes, it was with a happy feeling that I was having dessert and not adding on more pounds. What was even better than that, was how much I enjoyed the snack cake. I frequently find that “low calorie” or “healthy” does not mean “happy mom.” But this was not the case with these little Twinkie like cakes. I was even excited that both of my girls (ages 8 and 16) liked them too.

After each trying one, we actually had to negotiate who would eat the remaining ones and when. Yes, these low calorie and 1 point snacks were such a hit that we still thought of them as a treat. How awesome is it to make yourself (and your children) happy with a snack that is just a fraction of the calories of the alternatives we wish for are? We are now keeping our eyes out while in the grocery store for not only the sponge cakes, but also the other Weight Watcher snacks. I can’t wait to find the chocolate ones! When I find those they will be making a special place into my desk drawer at school for those times when hunger or a sweet craving strikes.

I was really hoping that I’d find a lower calorie and fat alternative to the Twinkie in the Weight Watchers Sponge Cake, but I was disappointed. The golden cake part was pretty decent. I mean it resembled the taste and texture of my beloved Twinkies, only it was of course a smaller portion. My issue really resides with the creamy filling that tasted like soap. Ok, maybe not soap, but it tasted very unnatural. I can’t exactly put my finger on what odd aftertaste it left in my mouth, but a chemical soap cleaner might be the best I can do to name it.

I know when they make snacks that are less calories and fat they must use other substitutes for flavoring, but something is way off on this filling. I could only eat on cake and our 6 year old son who assumed they were Twinkies and can’t read boxes told me, “That was no Twinkie Mom!” Granted he didn’t describe it as soap, but he knew it wasn’t a good match. This is the kid who we trick with buying generic cereals and pop-tarts and he never knows the difference. I’m hoping to try a few other Weight Watcher snacks and they might be more on target with my taste buds.

This was a 50/50 tie group review. I love the honesty. I’m going to brave it and give these a try. Thanks!!
