My husband was supposed to bring home a caramel apple making kit. One of those simple, wrap a big sheet of caramel around an apple, warm it up and then voila! Caramel apples! What he brought home was a Candy Apple making kit, because our grocer was out of caramel kits.
At first I was a little unsure because it called for a candy thermometer and bringing the product up to the hard crack stage, and if you’ve ever made real candy you know that this indeed is making real candy. However, I had little boys counting on me so I plodded onward.
It was easy to mix together, simply add water to the mix and then boil. You absolutely need a candy thermometer unless you are an expert at dropping the liquid candy into cold water and deciding if you have reached “hard crack.” Patience is required because it does take a long time for a big pot of liquid to get to 302 degrees, so plan accordingly. This won’t be a five minute boil.
Despite all this, it was devastatingly simple. The candy boiled up to desired level and I took the apples and swirled them in the delicious red candy. When it cool we had beautiful hard candy apples, just like at the fair. The flavor was delicious, exactly the right hot cinnamon flavor that you are used to.
This was a great treat and so much simpler to make than it seemed that it would be. Absolutely a fun family treat for fall, so I recommend picking one of these up. My grocer keeps them in the produce section.
