Several of our Props and Pans reviewers recently received samples from Johnson & Johnson’s new Bedtime Toddler Wash and Easy-Grip Sudzing Bar. As you can expect, they each had a different opinion. Read their reviews below and then sign up to win some to try for yourself!

I recently received a bottle of Johnson’s Bedtime Toddler wash as well as the Easy-Grip Sudzing bar of the same product to try out on my children. Being between ages 3 and 5, I’m not sure they still qualify as toddlers, but I’m all for anything that sends them off to sleep faster.
Both the liquid and the soap bar state that they have NaturalCalm essence, which will soothe my toddlers to sleep. Apparently they are a “patent pending blend of gentle and soothing aromas.” They don’t say what these aromas are, but from the purple packaging, one is supposed to infer lavendar I believe. However, upon reading the ingredients, I find them to be lacking in anything pleasant sounding like lavender, chamomile or other natural calming scent. What it is full of is Disodium Lauroamphodiacetate, Phenoxyethanol and the like.
I am not particularly against these things. It’d be nice if it actually had some lavender in it, then it might find some credence to it’s purple bottle and claims of bedtime calm. I think it’s just a nice smelling soap with fancy packaging and No-More-Tears features (which is a good thing). I visited their website looking for this product and found a fancy graph thing you can make where you chart your baby’s sleep habits (i.e. how long it takes them to drop off to sleep) after you start using this bathtime product. I suppose this was the sort of thing I might have done as a new mother wrestling with getting a baby off to sleep but as a more jaded, cynical mother of three I can say all it did was give me a laugh.

Jealousy has consumed me. Why was it not I who invented the Bedtime Easy-Grip Toddler Sudzing Bar? Efficiency makes me swoon and the easy-grip bar is nothing if not efficient.
How many times are you bathing the children and have to get up and find the washcloth? You know the one that is soft enough, the one with the Diego picture, the one without the hole. The Bedtime Sudzing Bar is a bar of soap made by Johnson & Johnson with a washcloth sewn around it. How perfect is that?
My kids love the bar, but being 4 and 7 years old they were offended that the soap said it was for toddlers. In addition to lifting the toddler limit, I think Johnson & Johnson should make this product for adults in groovy smells like tangerine-grass or lavender-lemon. They should also produce one of these dudes with an exfoliator on one side. (Consider that my patent!)

While I like the concept of Johnson & Johnson’s toddler bath care products, I won’t be testing them out on any child of mine. That is because they contain Dioxane. The product smells nice and I like the easy grip soap, but I’m just not willing to use anything on my child’s skin that is a known human immune system toxicant. There is strong evidence of Dioxane being a human carcinogen and California has passed a proposition (EPA 65) banning its use.
I just don’t understand why companies continue to develop products that could be potentially good products with potentially hazardous ingredients. It seems like a waste of their resources to me.

We began using these products during a horrible week of stomach flu when we were bathing everyone, especially the toddler, approximately 18 times a day. That might be a slight exaggeration, but it was a lot more than once a day. Soap was necessary each and every time, and you should thank me for not detailing why.
The first thing that I noticed about the toddler wash (and the bath bar for that matter) was that the scent was light and not objectionable. I am awfully sensitive to scent and this stuff is pleasant, but certainly not overpowering. Multiple washes a day didn’t dry out the kids’ skin or hair, and of course the No-More-Tears stuff works great. The bath bar is an odd sort of product, soap encased in a plastic wrapper that suds it up and makes it easier to hold onto. It’s an interesting concept and it certainly gets nice and sudsy, but it is rather difficult to see how much product is left.
As for the bedtime formula with a “proven routine” to help your child sleep better, we probably aren’t the best testers of that aspect, because we like our sleep around here. I didn’t notice any difference in how well the kids slept after using the wash and bar than using our regular bath products. The fact that they didn’t tear up my kids’ skin during an intense period of use is enough to make me switch.

I’m going to tell you straight up that I was very excited about this product. Anything that claims to help babies and toddlers sleep better through the night is fine with me. I had me hopes up. Way up. Unfortunately, I just did not see those results when I used it. It smelled nice, but as far as helping them fall asleep easier and sleep better, it just didn’t happen. Then, I cried. Not really, but I was very disappointed. If you want a baby soap that smells great go with this. If you want a sleep aid, keep looking and let me know when you have found it.
It’s not all negative though. I did really like the toddler soap bar. It is covered in a cloth that made sudsing much easier and is easy for toddlers to grip and hold. This is a great soap for them to learn to wash themselves with. I would purchase this product just for the learning aspect of it. Our daughter is really enjoying her “big girl soap!”

I have always had long, straight hair, and have always sworn by the No More Tears detangling spray. It has long been a mainstay in my house, well before I even thought about having children of my own. Now, with two little girls of my own, each with their own long, waist length hair, I still swear by it, and am never without at least one bottle in my house. My girls thank you for this product, and I do, as well, because without it, there would likely be more than a few tears in my house when it comes time for hair brushing.
We love the foam shampoo! It is easy to wash out and my son thinks it is fun, which makes hair washing a little more bearable for everyone. I would love to try the toddler bar as he is very interested in doing everything for himself and this sounds like it might give him a leg up for bathing!
