Does Tomo & Edie sound familiar to you? Well, if you’ve been reading Props & Pans over the past month it should! One of our reviewers tried out their Kusakizome Kimono for babies a few months ago and now they are introducing a new line of vintage Japanese hair accessories.
I recently tested out their pretty hair clips, bobby pin’s, barrette’s and hair ties. Each is uniquely different and no two are alike. I loved the vibrant colors and although it is a mixture, I was amazed that they seemed to match almost everything I wore. Plus I got several compliments! These are much more creative than the hair ties I usually purchase from Wal-Mart.
What I loved even more than the hair accessories was the story of how they are made. The process of creating a Kimono is very labor intensive and it can take several weeks to sew a traditional dress (which can be worth up to $10,000). Kimono’s are generally passed down from generation to generation. Tomo & Edie step in when the the dress reaches a point that it can no longer be worn. They work their magic by transforming the Kimono into a totally different product.
In a sense, they bring the beautiful gowns to life again by creating hair products. You have the opportunity not only to own a cool hair accessory, but a piece of history. Tomo & Edie are definitely doing their part to protect our environment by reusing and recycling, but also preserving an art form.

Ooh - I love the hairties and the baby kimonos! I have my hair pulled back all the time, so the hairties would be incredibly useful… but, since I’m newly pregnant with my first, the idea of something for baby is mightily appealing! Maybe I’d rather have the kimono - in the organic undyed or that lovely blue - in tiny newborn size! I can’t buy anything for baby yet b/c I’m too superstitious, but I don’t think winning something would violate my self-imposed rule, right?
