This is cool! That was my first impression of the Tomo & Edie Baby Kimono I got to review with my newborn. It is way different than all the other baby clothes you normally see. The kimono is 100% organic and the seams and tags are all on the outside so that it is more comfortable for the baby.
The color is just gorgeous. They use a traditional Japanese dye technique called Kusakizome, that uses all natural materials. The one I got was dyed with madder root, which means good fortune. The madder root made the kimono a beautiful wash of orange, not unlike a little funky tye dye.
It seemed so perfect, until I noticed the ties… that’s right, the ties. The whole premise of the kimono is that you don’t have to pull it over the baby’s head, so it first ties on the inside. It also has two ties on the outside, wrapping around the front of the baby. (Think hospital gown.) The problem here is that sleep deprived people, like new parents, are not good with this sort of thing. Or at least I wasn’t. However, after a few tries I finally got it on him and it was too cute. I loved the vibrant color as opposed to the normal pastels you get with baby clothes. I also really liked how roomy it was, it really seemed quite comfy.
There were a few downsides though. For instance, I don’t really see how it is easier to use than the traditional gown. And one of the selling points is that it has easy access for diaper changes, but again not any more so than a regular gown.
Overall, I was pretty pleased with the kimono. The price tag is pretty hefty, coming in at $44.00. You can get ones that are priced lower, but they are not dyed and are a little drab. If you are looking for a non-traditional baby item, or if you really dig organic materials, then I would totally suggest this kimono.
