What’s Wrong, Little Pookie?, the new board book by the great Sandra Boynton, chronicles the familiar situation we parents find ourselves in trying to determine why our charges, who don’t quite have vocabulary or ability to tell us, are upset. It’s another hit out of the park for her.
Pookie, the Pig, is crying and Pookie’s mother tries to find out why. When straight questioning yields only no’s (Are you cold? Are you hungry? Did you fall and get hurt? Have you lost your old teddy? Did you tear your new shirt?), Pookie’s mom resorts to the old parent stand-by, silly, humorous questions to try and elicit the answer. Ultimately, Pookie gets some comfort, even if his mother gets a bit frustrated in the process.
The pictures are adorable, all big-headed and colorful, as we’ve come to expect from Ms. Boynton. The meter and rhyme in the story are catchy and appealing to the littles.
My three year old has added this to the stack of 30 books she asks me to read her each night (no, I don’t actually read her all 30, more like 3) and my one year old appears to like the taste as well.
If you are looking for new books to read to your toddler or preschooler this winter, What’s Wrong, Little Pookie? by Sandra Boynton would be a great gift for your little one to open.

We have this book and I LOVE it! It’s soooo flippin’ cute! Whenever my daughter cries, I recite the first several pages and go through what might be bothering her. I don’t know if it makes her feel any better, but it helps me figure out what’s wrong without getting frustrated.
