Southpaw Light Beer

When you are a beer drinker, you’ll still occasionally come upon that week when you really, really, really want some beer, but your budget doesn’t afford, oh, say Newcastle. Or anything else that you would call a premium beer.

So the first thing you do is scope out the domestics. And your eyes drift toward the price range you are eyeballing….and you start to consider your options.

Recently, for a hoot, we picked up Southpaw Light Beer which is made by Plank Road Brewery, the pseudo-microbrewery Miller runs that brings you such find products as Icehouse Beer, whose only redeeming quality is it’s ridiculously high alcohol content.

Southpaw Light alleges to have won the bronze medal last year at the Great American Beer Festival, under the category of “American Style Lager - Light”. Given the number of Miller products that won medals at this event I’m beginning to suspect I know who one of the sponsors of this event was.

But back to the beer…

It’s average in regard to taste. It’s not particularly bad; a little bit of a bite but no where near the sort of bitter-death flavor of something like Milwaukees Best. Served cold, however, like all cheap beer, it will do but I’m not completely excited about it. The husband thought that for under $7 for a twelve pack I had exactly zero room for complaint and he’s probably right. For the price, it’s good.

Compared to “premium” beer? Meh, not so much.

Incidentally, I think it speaks volumes that I searched for several minutes on the Miller Brewing company website and could NOT find a link to this brand.
