“Katy Duck, Big Sister” by Alyssa Satin Capucilli ~ It’s Tough to be the Big Sister

Any parent will tell you what a pain in the neck (and lower) it can be to read the same children’s books over and over and over again.

I fully recognize that kids learn through repetition, but after reading Goodnight Moon and Guess How Much I Love You and The Very Hungry Caterpillar eleventy million times, your eyes can start to bleed (really!)

Since I have four kids, though, I am always on the lookout for new, exciting books to add to the lineup.

Alyssa Satin Capucilli’s Katy Duck, Big Sister is a just released new addition to our repertoire. Katy Duck loves to dance. She loves to spin and flutter, and she sings “Tra-la-la. Quack! Quack!” She would say “Look at me!” as she danced. But her little brother Emmett Duck needed lots of attention, and Katy didn’t always like that she wasn’t noticed. But one day she has an idea that helps Emmett and Katy get the attention they both need.

Henry Cole’s accompanying artwork is charming, bright and colorful without being overwhelming. The story has a positive message that is obvious without being condescending. The age range is 2-5, but my older kids have enjoyed reading it to their younger siblings as much as the littles have enjoyed hearing it.

Katy Duck, Big Sister would be a fine addition to any child’s board book library, but especially those struggling with adjusting to a new sibling.

Mary is a thirty-something SAHM of four under the age of eight. She is a lousy housekeeper, a voracious reader, and dabbles in art and music in various forms. She blogs to maintain her writing skills and her sanity in The Fish Pond.
