The W Lakeshore Hotel ~ Chicago

by Izzy

Just a few things for the W Lakeshore to think about…

Putting a guest room directly under your very loud nightclub? BAD, BAD, BAD, BAD idea. Did I mention that it was a bad idea? As you may have guessed. I was in that particular room. Thanks. A lot.

$14 Mojito at your downstairs bar? I know people think paying more money for things makes them all suave and big spenderish and overpriced drinks make your bar seem somehow, oh I don’t know…more glamorous but $14? That’s a bit much, don’t you think? Luckily, I only actually purchased one drink from any of your bars the whole time I was there because Parents/Goody Blog graciously comped our drinks the first night and, rather fortuitously, that awesome 7-11 down the street sells liquor. Oh, and that tacky styrofoam cup I was walking around with on Saturday night? It was booze, not Sprite. Because I’m classy like that.

No coffeemaker in the guest rooms? Seriously, people. Are you THAT hard up for cash that you have to resort to forcing people to order very pricey carafes of coffee via room service (and then you deliver tea by accident) or doing the morning walk of shame through your lobby to buy an overpriced cup of coffee from a dispenser set up at your bar? Even low-end hotels are kind enough to provide people with their morning crack without such strong arm tactics. Shame on you!

In every other way, W Lakeshore, your hotel was lovely and your service outstanding. Thank you for hosting all of us BlogHer conference attendees and for a mostly pleasant stay.

A guest room directly below the club? No amount of soundproofing (not that I expect there was any) can make that workable.

I knew the drink prices would be horrendous. When I was in Chicago in February, I had one bottle of beer at The Whiskey - $7. Plus tip. I threw a ten on that and called it a night.

If I hadn’t been PG, I would have been grumpy about the drinks and lack of coffeemaker too. Especially the coffeemaker - that is simply a standard amenity (or should be).

I am so with you on the coffee-maker. I have never been in hotel without one, and I mean ranging from the cheapest no-tell motel to some pretty franking high-end suites. Ridiculous. And hey, SO ridiculous, you didn’t even get to the SHUTTERS in the bathrooms! Maybe that’s their ploy right there…

I can’t even understand a $14 mojito. I have a crop of mint in my back yard and a fifth of rum in my pantry. Come over and I’ll serve you 20 mojitos for free!

I was in Chicago that same weekend, but did not attend Blogher. We stayed in a guesthouse that was absolutely incredible.

I’ve become pretty averse to hotels in general. I don’t stay in them if I can help it. Even the nice ones are slightly less than homey.

We look for guesthouses, condos, or similar accomodations wherever we travel. When you’re with a group, it is often just as affordable if not more so as a decent hotel room. And if you’re with the hubs and kids, having a kitchen will save money and still make it the more economical choice.

And…no nightclubs.

Thank god for the free drink tickets. I bet a Coke would have been $10. I thought the rooms were nice, but the glass bottles of water of $8? Don’t open that by accident!

I will forever mention the booger on the bathroom wall, but must jump in to say that some guy from the Whatever/Whenever station tracked down a Diet Coke for me, brought it to my room, and didn’t charge me a dime.

I was in so much shock and awe that I completely forgot to tip him. Crap.

The minibar rum at the W was $7. The water was $8.

I drank the rum because I promised my husband I’d make smart financial choices at blogher.

1. Jenny: I love you.

2. Izzy: Totally in agreement over the coffee maker. Even craptastic Motel 6 has those and I was completely shocked when I woke up the first morning!

After receiving the automated “Tell us what you thought” E-mail from the W, I mentioned the little thing about the coffee. They CLAIM they now have instituted coffee in the rooms. Anyone around to confirm that? ;O

And Jenny, can you come straighten out my finances?
