There is something about summer time that makes me want to break out some rock-n-roll music and just lounge in the sun, particularly when the 4th of July rolls around. It’s just the American way. When asked to review The Rolling Stones “Biggest Bang” DVD box set I was ecstatic! Who wouldn’t be?

It contained over 7 hours of live footage and beautiful music. I enjoyed the interviews and behind the scenes features, learning things I never knew. Then again I wasn’t born in this era of rock. The showcase was edited in the perfect sequence and flowed as smoothly as the sounds of live music. Eddie Vedder and Dave Matthews premiered as a ’special guest’ and completed my fantasy. This is a concert everyone can attend.

The Rolling Stones are the living legend band that you simply must see live. Like the Beatles, you know far many more Rolling Stones tunes than you think you do. Given the opportunity, you simply must get in your car and go to a Stones show. You must.

Barring the possibility of that, The Biggest Bang is a great option. Although nothing beats the heat and humidity of the actual crowd of a Stones show, The Biggest Bang gives you a good idea of what it might be like to be at a show.

Sporting the largest stage ever erected for a rock concert, The Rolling Stones played to crowds upwards of 100,000 in Brazil, Japan, China, Texas and Argentina. The whole set is 7 hours of Stones footage including a dull documentary that you can just skip unless you are really die hard fan but be sure not to miss the duets with Bonnie Raitt, Dave Matthews, and Eddie Vedder.

My husband and I are avid music fans. We are both musicians. We love live shows. For us, this box set is a great addition to a collection of concerts on DVD. Instead of putting on a CD during a party, we will often put on DVD’s of concerts. The Biggest Bang will fit in nicely with the 11 million hours of Live Aid that I also have on DVD.

So props to the new Rolling Stones box set. We enjoyed it mightily. But if you are not already a Stones fan, don’t go looking for this box set to turn you into one. For purchase, it is better suited for true fans and lovers of concerts. Renting it is a different story though. Because really, who wouldn’t want to see (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction performed in three different countries?

How could I write a bad review for the new Rolling Stones DVD set, The Biggest Bang, when disc one of four is entitled Zilker Park? Zilker Park is only where I run, where my children play and where the trail was closed for two days as roadies prepared for the Biggest Bang concert featured on the DVD.

Seeing the concert that was filmed at Zilker Park is amazing. The DVD shows the park packed with 45,000 fans who are thrilled to be in the midst of an historical show. What makes the Austin, Texas show unique is the Stones played some “once in a lifetime” songs. Hearing and seeing Mick Jagger sing Waylon Jenning’s song Bob Willis is Still the King is a must for any Stones fan.

Watching a concert on a computer is interesting, but listening to music in the car can’t be beaten. Guess if we had a fancy television with surround sound I could appreciate the DVD more. I’m a “loud music in the car” kind of girl. On the other hand, my children were completely fascinated at the sight of Keith Richards who is as old as their grandparents. They sat drop-jawed through the entire first disk.

In short, I love that the Stones still feel like entertaining the world. Nobody does it better. But then again, I would be just as happy with my Rolling Stones Some Girls on vinyl that my brother loaned me thirty years ago.

While I doubt I am eligible to win because I am a contributor, I wil say my favorite song is “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” but this is definitely NOT our children’s favorite song.

I began singing that song to myself when our oldest was a newborn. I didn’t know what he wanted and I sang the song in order to soothe myself and tell myself it was okay that as a new parent I couldnt’ figure out what and infant wanted and to just try my best to give him what he needed.

Then as my kids got older, I sang it to them while they tantrumed. Even out in public. I turned it into a teachable moment and let the lyrics sink in about how you “try sometimes you just might find, you get what you need.” and I would end it with “That’s what Mick says and he’s right.”

At the beginning of a tantrum, eventually the song got reduced to me asking, “What does Mick say?” and then that phrase would just turn off the tantrum like hitting a “no tantrum” switch. I was even asked about “who is Mick and how doe he have this power over your child to stop a tantrum right in its tracks?” I had to admit it was “Mick Jagger”

Last year, the Rolling Stones were the halftime show at the Superbowl. I turned to our oldest (who is now 11 years old) and said “Hey, look! On the TV! Do you know who that is? That’s Mick Jagger!” And my son gave me this long look, paused for dramatic effect because he knows how to do it so well, heaves a big sigh and laments, “Oh. Kids don’t like Mick, he doesn’t let them get what they want.”

“Shine a Light” is incredible, with an organ and vocal and intro which gets picked up by the rest of the band and finally transforms into a gospel-like song with the help of the back-up singers. Mick really sings with a lot of emotion in his voice. Unlike many singers today he really makes you feel something inside yourself. Also, this song has two very good guitar solos.

Sympathy for the Devil. Although, I might have to say “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” now because I absolutely LOVE Devra’s story about it! Terrific way to lighten up a bad situation. I’m definitely going to try it!

Under my Thumb. I first heard it when I was in England, and my then boyfriend/now husband and I used to joke about it all of the time!

It’s a tough one, but I think It’s Only Rock & Roll just takes it.

Love me some Rolling Stones. I’ll go with (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction, but I’ve got lots of favorites. My brother actually got my husband and I Rolling Stone tickets one year out of the blue, and he’s the “poor relation” :) Towards the end some people were leaving and handed us their tickets and told us they were farther up. We kept walking and walking past numerous guards until we ended up almost at the front for the last few songs - totally amazing. I think I got him a Stones or some other good concert in return a few years later.
