One of the things I struggle with fairly regularly is finding my 7 year old daughter clothes that don’t make her look like a “prostitot.” While there are an abundance of low-slung pants and crop tops with spaghetti straps to get my jaw outta whack, nothing gets me grinding my teeth faster than the bathing suit options.
Maybe I’m crazy, but I don’t think it’s cute for my first grader to wear a string bikini and especially not one with bottoms so tiny that they only come up halfway between her belly button and her hooha nor do I think it’s appropriate for her to be wearing anything that has gathers around her breasts. The last thing I want is her wearing clothes that emphasize her chest. She doesn’t even have breasts. She’s SEVEN!
Furthermore, I have serious doubts that those flimsy, stringy suits would stay put when she jumps off a diving board or comes down a water slide.
Enter Land’s End. I put off buying Land’s End bathing suits for a long time, because to me they are expensive, and why should I spend $30 for a bathing suit from them when I could find one from Target or Carter’s for half the price? Well, the answer to that is that they are just plain better.
The straps are an inch thick. There are no gathers anywhere they shouldn’t be. The seat keeps the behind covered, even in the toughest diving and surf conditions. The colors and styles are attractive for both little girls and tweens while being appropriately modest at the same time. And they wear well, too – they are durable enough to be able to hand them down to younger siblings even after a summer of daily use.
That makes them a great value. Plus, Land’s End has their Overstocks division, so you can sometimes get great deals on last season’s suits, which makes my inner tightwad very happy, and I am always happy to patronize companies that have actual people answer the phone instead of machines.
If you need a suit for your child that won’t look like something out of the Sports Illustrated Jr. Swimsuit Issue, call Land’s End. You’ll be happy you did.

My daughter has had a Land’s End swim suit for years. Because it’s a tankini and she’s so thin, it’s kind of grown with her and thus we’ve had a chance to see how well it held up. What’s awesome about it is that the elastic has never gotten stretched out or dry rotted and the stitching has never come undone like with many other cheaper swimsuits she’s owned. It was well worth the extra $$$, IMO.
SO echo this post!!! I have the most modest child in the universe. She wants no part of bikini and won’t even travel the path of tankini. In fact, while she was rejecting every bathing suit at our local sportswear store, the salesperson said, “What did you do to this child to make her so modest? Has she been locked in a dark closet?”
My friend told me about Lands Ends suits and the board shorts that they had. I showed them to my daughter online and she loved them. Much to my horror, the ones she wanted were on BACKORDER. Killed myself. We did find some other long board shorts at REI. My six-year old looks like a surfer. Cute, but totally covered with a rashguard shirt and longish board shorts. Kids these days!
Go Lands End!!
