Nature Valley Crunchy Oats ‘N Honey Cereal

The Props and Pans team members were sent samples of Nature Valley Crunchy Oats ‘N Honey Cereal. We all tried it but did we all like it? Keep reading to find out!

I was excited to receive my Nature Valley Cereal sample in the mail. I like their granola bars, though we don’t eat food like that very often in our house. I was very pleasantly surprised at the cereal. It was sweet, but not sickeningly so. And the chunks of ‘actual’ granola bar? Awesome. In fact, I picked most of them out as snacks before trying the cereal with milk, which is really too bad because they’re great with milk. I’m seriously considering buying a few Nature Valley granola bars to crush up in a bowl of milk - it’s that good. The ingredients we not remotely scary, barring the excessive sugar content. It’s always refreshing to be able to pronounce your food. My only suggestion ~ more granola bar pieces!

Cereal is a breakfast staple for our family. Regardless of the carb counting craze, it is still the easiest and most efficient breakfast I can offer them that still includes a good dose of fiber. Typically I buy three cereals, mix them together in a separate container and that is what we eat. I like to have a flake, some granola, and then the All-Bran is for practical purposes only.

When Nature Valley came out with a granola cereal, I was very excited. The flakes and the granola are all in one box. We sat down to breakfast, poured one cereal from one box and dug in. My taste buds were not disappointed. We both thought the cereal tasted very good. My main concerns were that it was a little too sweet, there wasn’t enough fiber, and the main ingredient was rice.

The granola pieces were very soft once the milk was added, so they would be safe for kids with braces. It did seem to be more of a kid’s cereal overall, which is fine, because I’m pretty sure our 11 year old isn’t as excited about the All-Bran as I am.

We are big cereal eaters in this house. Lots of varieties too. We eat everything from the sugar coated marshmallows to the shredded wheat. My husband absolutely loves granola in general. There is a small healthy bakery near us that sells homemade granola and it has been his favorite for a while. He was very excited to see the Nature Valley cereal enter our house. It is sweet, but even if you don’t care for cereal this makes a great snack and is very filling. The granola bar pieces are the best part! If you’ve never had Nature Valley’s granola bar products, they are scrumptious. I’d love to see more varieties of this cereal, maybe with dried fruit. Imagine taking your favorite snack and turning it into a yummy cereal that’s actually pretty good for you. D.E.L.I.C.I.O.U.S.

It’s a bit weird for me to be reviewing this cereal since I can’t actually eat it, but I’m doing it anyway so you’ll just have to roll with it. I am allergic to rice, and if I actually ate the cereal I’d have to do this writeup from the ER while I waited for my system to stop freaking out, and since I’ve spent enough time in the ER recently with my ailing grandfather, I fed the cereal to my husband and kids and interrogated them instead.

Well, this box of cereal was delivered to our house Thursday afternoon. By Thursday night (okay, okay, Friday morning) It. Was. Gone.

Finit. Done. Toast.

Okay, not toast. But it is rice and granola and flakes, full of whole grain wheat, oats, and corn, and best of all, it has NO hydrogenated oils. It uses good old canola oil instead. That means it’s low in fat, reasonable in fiber and sodium, and won’t clog up your arteries unless you drench it in whole milk. It also does not have any nuts in it, so for those of you with run-of-the-mill allergies like nuts instead of weird allergies like mine, it is safe you (or if your school is a “nut free” school like my son’s, it is safe to send in lunch). While it is great with some skim milk, as the granola pieces stay nice and crunchy, my husband recommends the “shove hand in bag, grab handful, and slam it down your gullet” approach.

My husband loved it. The kids loved it. It not only makes a great cereal, but my husband immediately noted that it would make an excellent base for trail mix on one of his hikes or backpacking trips. We’ll have to go buy another box to try that out, though.

We were sent a sample of the Nature Valley cereal and, in short, it was a hit! My husband, daughter, toddler son and myself nearly finished the box in one sitting just eating it dry. Everyone loved it, especially my six year old daughter, who has never had granola before. She has a peanut allergy and most granola bars have a peanut warning on the label so she can’t eat them but the cereal is peanut-safe and the world now has one more granola lover!

I like that it has no hydrogenated oils and even though it was a tad sweet for my taste when I ate it dry, it’s not as noticeable when you eat it with milk. We all loved it and it’s very likely I’ll be buying it again.

I’m a pretty big fan of Nature Valley Granola bars in general, so I was completely jazzed to get to try their NATURE VALLEY CRUNCHY Cereal. It actually contains pieces of the granola bars, which was completely suspect to me. It didn’t even sound like it would be good, I had a hard time fathoming the soggy mess that those granola bar pieces would turn into. I was imagining a sort of big, weirder, oatmeal laden version of a shredded wheat block.

And I was wrong.

First of all, it’s a cereal that’s tasty by the handful right out of the box, which is always a good sign to me. In milk, it stays crunchy and is nicely brown sugar and honey flavored. It was quite tasty through the entire bowl and didn’t really get any soggier than any other flake cereal does in milk. So that was a delightful surprise.

And then I did the WW points.

Well, you can’t have everything. It’s 5 points with the milk and it’s probably the granola bars with their fat content pushing them up. It’s not TERRIBLE but I try not to blow 5 on breakfast when I’m counting my points. So it depends on your points allotment, is this worth 5 of your points if you are a WW fiend like I can be at times?

It is delicious, and I’m really enjoying it, but calories or WW points should be considered if you are watching your weight. Because despite it’s healthful attributes and fiber, it has a lot of fat for a cereal - 3g. So I give it a prop, with a caution!
