There aren’t a lot of reasons to order mail order gourmet coffee other than to get something you can’t get anywhere else. I became acquainted with Boca Java a couple of years ago and have always been impressed by the quality of their roast (never bitter or over-roasted) and by their variety of flavors. Plus, their packaging is just plain cool.
I got a discount from a friend from a referral form, and because it was going to make the shipping free and then some, I ordered some coffee from them.
Since Easter was on the way I was intrigued and ordered Cottontail Delight.
It alleges itself to be an exciting blend of white chocolate and puffy marshmallows. I have to say I couldn’t really taste the marshmallow flavor but the white chocolate was smooth and sweet. One major point about their flavors is that they do a nice job of not whacking you in the head with their flavor blends.
When you open the bag (which is resealable via a Ziploc mechanism) you see nice, black Arabica beans (or grounds) and get a great whiff of coffee scent FIRST, before you smell the flavor they’ve used. And that’s a nice change for flavored coffee. Everyone has opened a bag of flavored coffee and had the smell about knock you over before you even got it all the way open. Boca Java knows the importance of giving you a fun flavor – but backing it up with seriously quality coffee.
Their bags are not only resealable, they come with one way valves, letting oxygen out of the bag and keeping the nitrogen in (which is what keeps your coffee fresh). Too much oxygen causes staling and your coffee to taste like absolute yuck!
This is why you should never store your coffee in anything but an airtight container. Also, just a note to the peanut gallery… Coffee is a very absorbent product, it takes smells from anything that is around it an absorbs it. If you put coffee in the fridge or freezer. It will absorb the smell of anything in there with it, thus altering the taste. There is nothing about coffee that requires it to be cold, it only wants to be airtight, keeping out the oxygen that reduces it’s shelf life.
Boca Java also retooled several of their blends as “blogger blends” which is pretty funny. A good friend ordered me some of that a while back as well as giving me a coffee cup they were selling that said “NEVER BLOG ON AN EMPTY TANK”, which I never do.
CottonTail Delight was a fun flavor; tasty, not overwhelming, and enjoyable to drink. I give it a prop!
Now I just wish I had saved some for Easter morning!
