Fiber One Chewy Bars ~ Oats & Chocolate Flavor

The Props & Pans team was recently supplied with Fiber One Chewy Bars to sample and review. We all tried them but did we all like them? Keep reading to find out!

I know I do not get the daily recommended intake of fiber that I should, but I’ve really never noticed it affecting me internally (if you catch my drift). I love granola type bars and anything with chocolate, so the Fiber One chewy bar was a must-try. It tasted wonderful. Sometimes you get things that say they are high in fiber and you feel like you’re chewing on cardboard.

This would be excellent to give kids who need a little extra fiber in their diets, too. They’ll think it’s a candy bar!

I was initially skeptical of the value of the bars - lots of chocolate and a little yummy icing ribbon on top really just put them in the same category as every other “cereal” breakfast bar at first glance; lotsa sugar, lotsa calories which would end up giving you an incredible sugar LOW when your body starts kicking out all the insulin required to metabolize that madness.

However, upon review of the dietary facts……….well………they aren’t so bad for you. They only equal 2 Weight Watchers points, which isn’t bad at all. They are a good size for a meal replacement at only 2 WW points. And, for those who just count the calories, just 140 calories.

Additionally, they are quite tasty. To give them an unusual kick their first ingredient is chicory extract, which makes them a yummy nod to the bayou. They are a little but not TOO much different from other bars out there taste wise, but you are getting something out of them for the fiber. I give them a prop.

I’m a big fan of chocolate chip granola bars and the Fiber One chewy bars are very similar except they’re a lot heavier on the oats. My chief complaint about them is the fact that while they do taste good, they are SO sweet. I’m not sure I could eat one without a big glass of milk to cut the sweetness. I’m also not thrilled about the fact that they contain hydrogenated oils.

The upside is that they only have 4 grams of fat and a whopping 9 grams of fiber, which I desperately need, and while I’d prefer to get those 9 grams of fiber from a small bowl of raisin bran, I can’t exactly stick one of those in my purse to eat on the go. All in all, I’d eat one in a pinch, away from home or when I’m really craving something sweet but probably not as part of my everyday diet.

Fiber One chewy bars taste really good. Believe it or not, this is not a good thing. There are too many products on the market that taste really good and are terrible for you. I tasted them before I read the ingredients, but I’m really glad I read them before I fed them to a child. Containing fiber is one thing. Great. But there are many better sources of fiber out there. I recommend sources that don’t contain shellac, hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, high maltose corn syrup, sugar, ethanol and palm kernel oil. These are just a few of the yummy ingredients in Fiber One chewy bars *note sarcasm here*. Regardless of the taste, I’d never buy these after reading the ingredients. I’ll stick to my Red River cereal and whole grain breads.

I’m currently reading Bob Green’s new Best Life book. You know? His new program was featured on the Oprah show? Being a fitness professional myself, I have always had a great respect for Bob. However, upon seeing that Fiber One chewy bars are approved by him for his “diet,” I have to wonder if he’s being paid by General Mills. I’m disappointed in the bars, and in Bob.
