Crayola Twistables = Best Invention Ever*

twist.jpgIf you have children old enough to color, you are surely familiar with how quickly a pristine new box of crayons turns into a box of broken stubs and little peeled paper bits. It’s a scenario that I remember from when I was a little kid and as an adult, I find it oddly irritating.

Fortunately, those days are over; neat freaks and Type A moms can now unclench because Crayola has come up with something truly revolutionary. They are “twistable” crayons, appropriately named Twistables and frankly, I can’t believe someone didn’t come up with this idea sooner since they’ve been doing it with eyeliner for years.

Basically, the crayon part is located inside a plastic tube that you can twist up and down like a lipstick. The plastic housing eliminates the need for the paper wrapper and keeps the crayons from breaking. They do last a LOT longer and though all that extra plastic bothers my inner greenie, I’m willing to overlook it because they no longer use paper. No, it’s not a perfect trade-off but it will have to do because I’m never buying those other crayons ever again (and I do solemnly swear to recycle the plastic.)

And finally, one least reason to get ultra psyched about the Twistables… they seemed to have inspired my daughter to keep track of them whereas her regular crayons were constantly being left here and there without a second thought. That alone is worth the $4 I paid for them.

Thank you, Crayola. You’ve really outdone yourself although I’m still holding a little grudge over this flimsy piece of junk that has already been thrown out because it hardly worked and was so totally not kid friendly. Lucky for you I got it on clearance for $6 because if I’d paid the full price of $18 for it, I’d be giving it it’s very own post and dissing it even more.

*Okay…maybe I got a little carried away. They’re the best invention ever after electricity and the Tollhouse cookie.

YES! YES! YES! I purchased a set of these badboys at the airport for our 6 year old and he LOVED them. My hubby, who is far more anal about neatness than me, also sang their praises!

We’ve owned a set of these for quite a while, and my kids love them (ages 10 and 7). They were great for a long plane trip: we didn’t have to worry about pencil sharpeners (like with colored pencils), and they didn’t melt on us here in the desert summer heat like regular crayons do when left lying around.

We’ve been using these for years, and they rock. Never had one break on us, and my boys are rough. They’re kinda like a cross between a colored pencil and a crayon, or atleast the effect is.

Colored pencils, while wonderful for older kids in my opinion, just frustrate my 6 year old because he ends up pushing down too hard and either breaking the tip or ripping his paper.

I agree. My daughter also gets frustrated because they always need sharpening and well, we’re just not that organized. Finding the sharpener can be tricky sometimes.

I bought these for my three-year-old daughter. She loves them! Kids get sick of toys fast and I found that they get sick of colored pencils and crayons fast too. I think it’s important to keep them interested by introducing them to new ways of coloring. The fact that it’s something they’ve never seen or used before in itself makes them get excited and want to use them! All in all, I think the Crayola Twistables are a wonderful invention. It’s much closer to future technology where we probably won’t even have to sharpen crayons anymore! Thank goodness!!!
