The Product Ho: Yoplait Whips

I have a confession. I’m a product ho.

I was recently asked to sample Yoplait Whips yogurt and naturally I jumped at the chance to get my hot little hands on some free yogurt.

Why? Because I love being part of the action and having a voice and helping to shape the marketplace blah blah blah…

Okay, not really.

I’m just a big old product ho who likes to get free stuff and review it.

Yeah.

So I got my coupons for three free containers of Yoplait Whips in the mail and I excitedly selected latté, chocolate mint and dulce de leche flavors (and I grabbed a key lime flavor on my own dime because it sounded tasty) when I went grocery shopping.

The “whip” part had me all atwitter. I couldn’t wait to tear into one. I settled on the latté flavor and really, it wasn’t that bad. BUT…and this is a very BIG but…it did have that odd tangy-sour taste that is inherent to yogurt. I then tried the dulce de leche and it was similar in that it also had that weird tangy-sour taste. It was okay but let’s just say that those two flavors wouldn’t be my first choices.

Next I tried the key lime flavor which is tart like key lime pie and fortunately, you don’t notice the sourness at all so it was actually pretty good. In fact, I think if you stick to the fruity flavors, it probably goes virtually unnoticed…a definite plus in my opinion.

Finally, a few days later, I tried the chocolate mint flavor and I’m sorry but it was nasty. The weird tangy-sour taste just does NOT go with chocolate mint.

But for what it’s worth, my friend buys the regular chocolate Yoplait Whips for her kids and they really love them so it’s ultimately a matter of taste or lack thereof… (as in some people just don’t taste the sourness as much as I do)

I did like the fluffy, whipped texture but only after I made peace with the fact that it’s very un-yogurt like. You have to accept that the whipped-ness is kind of bizarre, not unlike Cool Whip, and just enjoy it for what it is.

All in all, the Yoplait Whips were not bad but I strongly suggest that you stick to the fruity flavors and try not to think too much about how they get it all fluffy like that.

My husband designed some robots for yoplait. I know how it gets all fluffy like that. It is not gross. You can enjoy the fluff…..unless you are like me who doesn’t like the fact that it contains gelatin. My best diet snack disappeared in a puff (or fluff) of animal bone barfiness. Gack.

I wrote a product review about the Yoplait Whips too. I agree that they seemed more sour than regular yogurt, maybe because I don’t expect something with chocolate in it to be sour. And the texture was just wrong for yogurt. But then I had several comments from readers who really like the Whips, go figure.

I also read Elizabeth’s review of this product on her site a while back. I have taken to eating plain yogurt and mixing in fruit. I just don’t want the added sugar in regular yogurt. (I mean, who can afford all those calories in yogurt when you’re eating mint chip ice cream every night for dessert, right?)

My taste for yogurt waxes and wanes. I bought a few on sale for the kids. They loved them. I don’t think they taste bad, either. I was able to get over the yogurty after taste, mostly because I have come to terms with things like frozen yogurt, yogurt coated snacks, etc.

Anyway, I’d much rather feed this to my kids than pudding and they don’t mind at all.

There are some fabulous yogurts out there. To me, the best is to buy plain and mix in your own stuff so you can control the amount of sweetness and avoid things you don’t want to eat, like gelatin or artificial colors.

Straus Creamery Whole Milk Organic Yogurt is a staple at my house. It is really, really good. I think it is probably only available in California (Trader Joes has it) because they are a small, family owned dairly.

Total Yogurt by Fage is expensive but so worth it. Thick and creamy. I think it is probably only at Trader Joes and health food stores.

If you have a mediterranean/armenian/greek/bulgarian etc market in your town, go there and ask the people what their favorite yogurt they carry is. Chances are it will be both thick and tangy. I get a fabulous bulgarian yogurt that is so thick you can stand a spoon up in it. Super yum.
